Sing A Song
(to the tune of Old MacDonald)

It’s story time, we have a book. E-I-E-I-O.
Let’s read it to our friend the horse. E-I-E-I-O
With a neigh-neigh here, and a neigh-neigh there.
Here a neigh, there a neigh, everywhere a neigh-neigh.
It’s story time, we have a book. E-I-E-I-O.

                                                      Story Time with Puppets
  1. Bring out the puppets or make your own.
  2. If you don’t have enough barnyard puppets, then bring in the elephants, dinosaurs, butterflies, eagles and whatever else might be eager to join the menagerie.
  3. Choose one child to be the sun.  Give her a yellow plate, pillow or something to represent the sun.
  4. Tell the children, “I really need your help in telling the story.  The puppets sometimes get wild and noisy, so it’s your job to keep them calm and quiet.  We are going to practice.  When the sun is high in the sky, the animals can make lots of barnyard noises.  But when the sun sets, the animals have to be quiet.”
  5. Practice this a few times: sun up, sun down.  I find that the children are incredibly cooperative, taking pride in keeping their puppets under control.
  6. Read the story and invite the puppet to neigh, mooo, book-book-book, etc..  When  you read, “Their sounds of delight lasted until sundown,” keep the sun high in the sky for a minute and let the animals go wild!

Mysteries to find in Book! Book! Book!
  1. Mystery guest - The illustrator created a character that does not appear in the story.                               Can you find it?  Who do  you think is his best friend?
  2. Mystery puppet - What puppet does the librarian use at story hour?                                                      Now look at the animals’ story hour.  The cow has a puppet.  What kind of puppet do you think it is?
